CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers to avoid taking the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra because it may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Viagra, the popular erectile dysfunction drug from Pfizer Inc., has been linked to the heart risks.
The FDA says the drug also increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
"The FDA issued a press release warning consumers of the increased risk of heart attack or stroke due to Viagra, while notifying them of the drug's potential effects," the FDA said in a news release. "Consumers can expect to experience adverse events and side effects related to Viagra that are not listed in the drug safety information."
The agency says the warning is "a significant precautionary measure."
The warning comes after a study in rats found that taking Viagra could increase the risk of a sudden and serious heart attack.
"In this study, a group of 60 male rats was given 10 mg of sildenafil (Viagra) twice a day for 5 days," the FDA said in a statement.
In addition, the FDA says the drug is associated with a slight increase in the risk of heart problems, such as irregular heartbeats.
Viagra has been the subject of a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association and other scientific publications, and the FDA said the drug is only FDA-approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The study was stopped in 2013 after the FDA cautioned consumers to avoid taking Viagra because of potential for increased heart risks.
